Richard A. Leo
A University of San Francisco associate law professor, Richard A. Leo, Ph.D., J.D. was formerly a tenured professor of psychology and criminology at UC Irvine. Leo is internationally known for his pioneering empirical research on police interrogation practices, false confessions, and wrongful convictions. An author of more than 60 articles in scientific and legal journals and of several books, he wrote, Police Interrogation and American Justice, an award-winning study of police interrogation and confessions. Leo and Tom Wells co-authored The Wrong Guys: Murder, False Confessions and the Norfolk Four, a notable false confessions case. Leo’s work to help free the Norfolk Four was featured in New Yorker Magazine in 2009. Dr. Leo is the recipient of numerous individual and career achievement awards for research excellence. He is often called to advise and assist practicing litigation attorneys and often serves as a litigation consultant or an expert witness in criminal and civil trials.
